In-person mentoring is an important part of maintaining competence and professionalism in legal practice. It helps develop practical skills, supports sound judgment, and provides a foundation for meeting professional responsibilities—particularly the duty to guide and supervise less-experienced lawyers.
As AI becomes more common in legal work, mentoring also plays a role in helping lawyers meet their obligations related to competence, supervision, and responsible use of new tools. Both traditional mentoring and "reverse mentoring" can contribute to a better understanding of these responsibilities.
This program will address:
- The relationship between mentoring and lawyers' ethical duties, including competence and supervision;
- How experienced lawyers can create intentional, in-person mentoring opportunities that support good judgment and professional development;
- Ways to incorporate mentoring into everyday practice in a practical and sustainable way; and
- The role of reverse mentoring, including how younger lawyers' familiarity with technology can inform more experienced lawyers' understanding of emerging tools and related responsibilities.
This program is intended for attorneys at all experience levels in private practice, government, and in-house settings.
