Five Jones Day partners among Law360's MVPs for 2022
Five Jones Day partners have been named 2022 MVPs by Law360 in the legal news service’s annual selection of leading lawyers in a range of practice area and industry categories. The MVP awards honor elite attorneys for their successes in high-stakes litigation, significant deals, or complex global matters in the previous year.
David Kiernan, Partner-in-Charge of Northern California and a member of the Business & Tort Litigation Practice residing in the San Francisco and Silicon Valley offices, and Jeffrey LeVee, partner in the Antitrust & Competition Law Practice residing in the Los Angeles Office, were recognized as Competition/Antitrust MVPs. The pair were co-lead trial counsel for a large California health care system, securing a complete defense verdict in a landmark class action seeking more than $1.2 billion in treble damages. Including a five-week trial with more than 50 witnesses, the case was to date the largest antitrust class action jury trial against a hospital system, and makes an important contribution to both antitrust and health care law.
Rémy Fekete, partner in the Government Regulation Practice residing in the Paris Office, was recognized as a Telecommunications MVP. Mr. Fekete assisted the Government of Ethiopia with the International Finance Corporation, or IFC, in granting the first private telecommunications license for $850 million to the Vodacom group. Vodacom agreed to invest more than $8 billion in building a new mobile telecom network over the next 10 years in what authorities term the largest deal ever completed in Ethiopia.
Melissa Stear Gorsline, partner in the Global Disputes Practice residing in the Washington Office, was recognized as an International Arbitration MVP. As co-lead counsel for two Canadian mining companies in their multi-hundred million dollar arbitration claims, Ms. Gorsline successfully obtained precedent-setting international arbitration victories which directly led to both the establishment and confirmation of the modern standard for treaty succession under international law.
Amanda Sommerfeld, partner in the Labor & Employment Practice residing in the Los Angeles Office, was recognized as an Employment MVP. Ms. Sommerfeld successfully led complex employment litigation in California for a global hospitality company and also effectively advanced nuanced defenses in multiple airline class and representative actions involving both pilots and flight attendants.
