Three Jones Day lawyers named 2025 "Rising Stars" by Law360
The global law firm Jones Day announced that three of its lawyers— Brinton Lucas (Appellate), Garrett Gibson (Construction), and Justin Martin (Employment)—have been recognized on Law360's 2025 Rising Stars list. This award spotlights top attorneys under 40 who excel in major litigation, complex transactions, or significant regulatory matters within their respective fields.
A partner in the Issues & Appeals Practice, Mr. Lucas is an appellate litigator with substantial experience in high-profile challenges to government regulation. A former senior official at the Justice Department, he has argued more than a dozen appeals, including before the Supreme Court, the en banc Ninth Circuit, and the Fifth, Seventh, Eighth, D.C., and Federal Circuits. He also has successfully led briefing efforts in major regulatory challenges, showcasing a proven ability to combine insightful legal analysis with persuasive advocacy on issues of national importance. As an Assistant to the Solicitor General, Mr. Lucas delivered a procedural win to the United States and corporate defendants in climate change litigation before the Supreme Court. He also recently won a precedential decision in the Fifth Circuit on behalf of a Firm client challenging SEC buyback rules.
Mr. Gibson, recognized for his leadership in the practice of construction law, focuses on large-scale disputes, contract negotiations, and project counsel work for owners, developers, and contractors. He has played a pivotal role in resolving high-value claims related to petrochemical plants, student housing projects, and other sophisticated construction ventures. Recent achievements include securing a rare summary judgment on liability in a complex arbitration by eliciting critical admissions from the opposing party during deposition, which forced a highly favorable settlement, and securing another summary judgment on behalf of a decommissioning coal-fired power plant, preserving its wind-down process despite a barge contractor's lawsuit for early termination.
Mr. Martin, a partner in the Firm's Labor & Employment Practice, advises and represents clients in a range of labor and workplace disputes, including wage and hour, discrimination, and collective action matters. A trusted advocate before the National Labor Relations Board, he has secured favorable outcomes for leading global employers in high-profile, multi-charge proceedings and labor negotiations. Highlights include defending a client against allegations that it was a joint employer of non-supervisory employees, leading to a favorable NLRB-approved settlement that did not involve admission of joint-employer status. Mr. Martin has also secured numerous dismissals and withdraws on unfair labor practice matters before the NLRB, including cases alleging joint-employer relationships between the company and third-party contractors.
