Nathalie Smyth has more than 20 years of experience advising global manufacturers, importers, and distributors in a wide range of high-value product liability, product safety, and mass tort claims in the United Kingdom (UK) and the European Union (EU).
Nathalie handles products claims and related actions (including inquests) arising from the use of implantable and other medical devices, pharmaceuticals/IMPs (investigational medicinal products), digital technologies, white goods (major household appliances), electronic equipment, toys, batteries, food products, and automotives.
Nathalie has managed high-profile and commercially sensitive group actions. Prior to joining Jones Day in 2025, she was part of the senior strategy teams in the defense of three large group actions, including the team that successfully defended a landmark group litigation action brought by more than 300 claimants against DePuy International regarding its metal-on-metal hip replacement prosthesis, which the court found not to be defective under consumer protection legislation.
She also advises on compliance with product safety regulations in relation to the placing on UK and EU markets of a variety of consumer goods and machinery and handling/advising on issues arising with post-market surveillance, including recalls, and liaising with marketing surveillance authorities on risk and compliance issues.
Nathalie has significant experience in handling and coordinating the defense of international and cross-border product liability claims, as well as advising on choice of law and jurisdictional issues.
She has authored numerous publications for Mondaq, Insurance Post, and The Financial Times' "Sustainable Views" and is a key speaker at industry conferences globally.
