William Blair wins Seventh Circuit Appeal in copyright case over legal instruments

Jones Day represented William Blair & Company, L.L.C. ("William Blair") in an appeal of a copyright action before the Seventh Circuit. William Blair was sued by UIRC-GSA Holdings, LLC ("UIRC"), which sells bonds to finance real estate portfolios. UIRC had registered copyrights on documents used in its bond offerings. UIRC alleged that William Blair copied those legal instruments when working on behalf of a different client. The trial court granted summary judgment for William Blair, awarding William Blair its attorneys' fees. On appeal, the Seventh Circuit fully affirmed both summary judgment and the fee award in favor of William Blair.
