Google invalidates three patents in IPRs asserted against Google Assistant

Client(s) Google LLC

Jones Day successfully represented Google LLC ("Google"), invalidating three patents owned by Sovereign Peak Ventures, LLC ("SPV"). SPV had originally asserted the three patents against Google Assistant as used in televisions developed and sold by LG (amongst other companies). Each of the patents generally relate to systems and methods for using voice recognition to remotely operate a plurality of electronic devices. On behalf of Google, we filed three inter partes review (IPR) petitions before the U.S. Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) challenging the validity of all claims of the three patents. SPV instead disclaimed each of the claims in the three patents, invalidating the three patents in full. In the institution decisions, the PTAB correctly denied each of the IPR petitions, finding that all the challenged claims had been invalidated.
