Honda successfully institutes IPR proceedings on telematics, weight sensing, and collision mitigation patents

Jones Day successfully instituted nine IPR proceedings on behalf of American Honda Motor Company, Inc. and Honda of America Mfg., Inc. against eight patents owned by by American Vehicular Sciences LLC (AVS). AVS asserted infringement of the eight patents relating to diagnostics/telematics, weight sensing/airbag, and collision mitigation technologies against Honda in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas (Case Nos. 6:13-cv-226; 227; and 228). The IPR petitions filed by Jones Day requested findings of invalidity of a total of 83 patent claims on 73 different prior art invalidity grounds. Review was instituted on all requested claims. In January 2015, all IPR proceedings as well as the district court litigation were dismissed upon joint motion of the parties, after a settlement was entered between the parties.
