Maria Yiasemides is an experienced commercial litigator with a focus on corporate insolvencies and reorganizations involving Australian and multinational enterprises.

Maria regularly advises administrators, liquidators, receivers, banks, distressed corporations, and creditors in insolvency processes involving global corporations and government entities in a number of industries and sectors including finance, retail, insurance, transport, media, energy, satellites, mining, and property development.

Examples of Maria's recent significant experience include acting for the Insurance Commission of Western Australia in the collapse of the Bell Group, one of Australia's largest and longest running corporate insolvencies, involving multijurisdictional disputes concerning the distribution of $1.8 billion in the Bell Group liquidations. She also acts for the receivers of NewSat in a claim against its CEO and chairman for breaches of duties relating to a satellite construction and launch project involving Lockheed Martin and Arianespace.

Maria's commercial litigation experience includes acting for Gina Rinehart's Hancock Prospecting in a trust dispute concerning Australian mining assets and acting for Fuji Xerox in Supreme Court proceedings commenced against a former dealer.

Maria has in-house legal experience having been seconded to the National Australia Bank's disputes resolution team where she worked on matters including the collapse of Storm Financial.

Maria has been selected to complete the INSOL International Global Insolvency Practice Course in 2018/2019.

Maria is an inaugural member of the Jones Day Sydney Pro-Bono Working Committee and founder of the Jones Day Young Professionals Sydney networking committee. She also sits on the committee of Australia's largest not-for-profit running organization, Sydney Striders Road Runners' Club Inc.
