Community team works to transform vacant properties to productive parcels to benefit flood-damaged municipalities in Pittsburgh

Client(s) RAAC (Redevelopment Authority of Allegheny Co)

Jones Day recently partnered with the Redevelopment Authority of Allegheny County ("RAAC") and private title and appraisal companies to create the Allegheny County Pro Bono Vacant Property Recovery Program. The project was announced by County Executive Dan Onorato at a press conference in June. Jones Day received recognition for its efforts. The pilot for the Program involves clearing title to a total of 15 vacant properties. The properties will be limited to side-yards and community beautification parcels situated in one of the following flood-damaged municipalities: Etna, Heidelberg, Swissvale, Harrison Township, Penn Hills and Turtle Creek. These communities lack funds to devote to this project, and in many cases the costs of clearing title exceed the appraised value of the property. Jones Day will help with a true community team effort to transform otherwise vacant properties to productive parcels to benefit our region. Individuals or community groups will apply through their local municipality, and the RAAC will evaluate and approve their applications before sending specific properties to Jones Day. Jones Day will perform the legal work necessary to assist the RAAC to obtain these vacant properties and return them to productive use.
