Jones Day's David Feder named to The Recorder's California Legal Awards 2023 "Lawyers on the Fast Track" list

David Feder has been named to The Recorder's California Legal Awards 2023 "Lawyers on the Fast Track" list, which celebrates the next generation of legal leaders in California under the age of 40.

Mr. Feder is based in the Firm's Los Angeles Office and is an associate in the Issues & Appeals Practice. He has particular experience in areas such as products liability (especially public nuisance law), tort law more generally, the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), California Unfair Competition Law (UCL), Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), and federal preemption. he has argued numerous motions and appeals in state and federal courts and tried a case in a state administrative tribunal.

In January 2017, Mr. Feder was asked by then Judge Gorsuch to work on his nomination to the Supreme Court. He worked closely with Judge Gorsuch, his external clerk team, and members of the Department of Justice and White House in support of the nomination. Once Justice Gorsuch was confirmed, he asked Mr. Feder to immediately start clerking for the remainder of October Term 2016 and during October Term 2017, his first full Term on the Court. After Mr. Feder completed those clerkships, Justice Gorsuch asked him to co-author a book with him. That book, A Republic, If You Can Keep It, became a New York Times bestseller.

Mr. Feder's recent highlights include winning a significant reduction in punitive damages in a product defect case for a vehicle manufacturer, a complete victory in a CEQA appeal in the California Court of Appeal for a transportation company, prevailing on behalf of an employer in an ERISA withdrawal liability dispute, successfully appealing an adverse public nuisance ruling for a product manufacturer, and setting an important First Amendment precedent on behalf of a Native American inmate who was temporarily denied access to ceremonial objects needed to practice his religious faith.

Beyond this legal work, Mr. Feder makes significant contributions to Jones Day and the Los Angeles legal community. He is an active speaker at local law schools and mentors younger lawyers, particularly those interested in appellate work. He also presents multiple times a year to the Firm's summer associates, new lawyers, and members of the Hispanic Lawyers Group on topics like legal research and writing and clerkships.
