Veterans Issues
The brave people who have served in the armed forces to protect freedom and the rule of law around the world should have access to justice here at home, and meaningful access means quality pro bono counsel. That is the premise of Jones Day's Veterans Initiative.
Jones Day provides pro bono services to individual veterans in matters that include benefits claims appeals and discharge upgrades. The Firm has successfully challenged Department of Veterans Affairs disability ratings decisions, ensuring that veterans receive the appropriate compensation and the benefits that correspond to their disabilities. Jones Day lawyers have also prevailed for veterans seeking to improve discharge status – which can result in access to jobs and benefits not otherwise available. In addition, Firm lawyers provided pro bono resources that supported the shutdown of one of the largest veteran scam programs in the country.
The Veterans Initiative brings all of the Firm's assets to the table, including our ability to convene industry and community leaders, work closely with Veteran Service Organizations ("VSOs"), and partner with Firm clients to serve our nation's veterans. The Discharge Upgrade File Review Project is just one example. Jones Day lawyers and clients participating in this effort review the files of veterans who are seeking pro bono assistance with discharge upgrades, which could enable them to receive VA benefits and health care, improve employment opportunities, and restore their reputations and self-esteem. The Firm has helped screen over 85 veterans' cases through this project, which is coordinated with the National Veterans Legal Services Program.
In 2024, Jones Day lawyers dedicated more than 4,200 hours to helping veterans.
