In addition to his deep experience in providing strategic employment and industrial relations advice, Mr. Hall has particular experience in the area of occupational health and safety, where he has represented clients under investigation by statutory authorities or subject to prosecution or coronial proceedings, including in respect of a number of catastrophic incidents at coal mines and other industrial workplace incidents.
"James is a respected Australian labor and employment lawyer who has advised clients in high-stakes cases, particularly related to matters in the energy and resources sector," said Liz McRee, co-Leader of Jones Day's Labor & Employment Practice. "His experience advising clients on discrimination, industrial relations and workplace safety issues is an excellent complement to our global practice and I am pleased to welcome him to the Firm."
At Jones Day, Mr. Hall joins a global Labor & Employment Practice, which includes more than 130 lawyers worldwide and is top-rated annually by Chambers and Legal 500. The Firm's lawyers have secured groundbreaking victories for clients in employment discrimination, harassment, wage-hour, and restrictive covenant cases across a number of jurisdictions.
"James is well-known in Australia, particularly in Queensland and Western Australia, for his valuable work on sensitive matters involving key labor, employment, and workplace safety law issues," said John Cooper, Partner-in-Charge of Jones Day's Brisbane Office. "His experience across all aspects of labor and employment law is an important addition to, and expansion of, our existing Labor & Employment Practice in Australia led by Adam Salter, which advises clients on labor and employment law issues, corporate transactions, and employment disputes in the technology, financial, manufacturing, and healthcare sectors. He will be a great asset to our clients in Queensland, Australia, and around the world."
Mr. Hall has been recognized by Chambers as a "well-regarded employment lawyer in Queensland who is … incredibly client-focused" and by Legal 500 as "the go-to-lawyer in the Queensland coal sector." He was named "Lawyer of the Year" in Labor and Employment Law by Best Lawyers Australia for 2020. Mr. Hall earned his bachelor of laws degree (LLB) from Queensland University of Technology.
"Jones Day is renowned for obtaining some of the most important legal victories for clients worldwide in labor and employment law, including matters related to a full spectrum of employment practices and a number of high-profile labor relations disputes," said Mr. Hall. "I was especially attracted to the Firm's seamless integration of employment law practitioners around the world, as well as the close partnership with lawyers in other key practice areas, such as M&A and Business Reorganization & Restructuring. I look forward to collaborating with my new Jones Day colleagues throughout the Firm."
