Jones Day successfully represents student charged with truancy
Client(s) Client N
"N" was charged with truancy in 2013, but she is now enrolled in high school full time, and her case has been closed. Historically, N had been a strong, self-motivated student, but her attendance slipped when she feared bullying at school.
Associate Mary Alexander Myers is a volunteer lawyer with the Truancy Intervention Project, which assigns volunteer lawyers to address the root causes of a student's truancy and defend students in court. Mary Alexander successfully advocated for N and won the juvenile court's acceptance of a somewhat novel solution - enrollment for N in a public, on-line high school. The on-line school is giving N traditional high school curriculum, access to involved teachers and counselors, and a free loaner laptop because she qualified for financial assistance.
