
Jones Day's Shireen Matthews and Tamera Weisser named "Women of Influence in Law" by San Diego Business Journal
Jones Day partners Shireen Matthews and Dr. Tamera Weisser, Ph.D. were named to the San Diego Business Journal's 2025 "Women of Influence in Law" list. This recognition celebrates the region's most influential women attorneys for their exceptional professional achievements and contributions to the San Diego community at large.
Ms. Matthews is a partner in Jones Day's Investigations & White Collar Defense Practice and Partner-in-Charge of the Firm's San Diego Office. A former federal prosecutor, she now helps companies conduct internal investigations and build, enhance, and maintain effective corporate compliance programs. Ms. Matthews regularly defends clients in high-stakes government investigations and regulatory proceedings relating to health care, false claims, cybersecurity, and data privacy. She also is an experienced civil litigator who represents businesses facing complex, and often enterprise-threatening, litigation.
An engaged community leader, Ms. Matthews serves on the board of trustees for Scripps Health and is a past president of the San Diego Chapters of the South Asian Bar Association and the Federal Bar Association. She also serves on the board of directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County and the San Diego Federal Bar Foundation.
Dr. Weisser is an Intellectual Property partner and leads Jones Day's global patent prosecution practice across the United States, Europe, and Asia. With over 25 years of experience in global patent portfolio development, management, and enforcement in biotechnology, particularly in antibody, cell, and gene therapies, her practice also includes performing patent validity and freedom-to-operate analyses and leading high-stakes due diligence of pioneering patent portfolios for investors, acquirers, and licensees. Dr. Weisser has shaped innovative IP strategies for dozens of therapeutics—including some of the best-selling medicines in the world—for clients such as AbbVie, Astellas, BMS, J&J/Janssen, Merck, and Xencor.
Dr. Weisser is consistently recognized as a top lawyer and for her leadership and contribution within the community. Most recently, she served as administrative partner of the Firm's San Diego Office and on the board of governors of Biocom California. She previously served on the boards of Lawyers Club of San Diego and the Association for Women in Science.
