James Young strategizes and assists in all stages of inter partes reviews (IPRs) and district court litigations. He has experience preparing, filing, and prosecuting patent applications. James is involved in the day-to-day management of patent portfolios and helps clients develop patent portfolios that are aligned with their business goals. His experience includes matters involving Internet of Things (IoT), computer software, medical devices, consumer products, communication systems, automobiles, metallurgy, semiconductor devices, circuits, inertial sensors, IC packaging, computer architecture, and optics.

James has worked on a number of post-grant proceedings at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), including inter partes reviews, for petitioners and for patent owners. He also assists in litigations at the federal district court level and Section 337 investigations at the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) and frequently helps attorneys with prelitigation counseling, drafting various patent-related opinions, and developing litigation strategies.

James has authored more than 27 journal articles and conference proceedings in the field of microelectronics and serves as a peer reviewer for several Institute of Electrical and Electronics (IEEE) journals, including IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices. During graduate school he was an Intel Ph.D. Fellowship recipient and a research intern at Oracle Corporation. He is also Microsoft certified as a database administrator (MCDBA), systems engineer (MCSE), and systems administrator (MCSA) and previously Cisco certified as a network administrator (CCNA).

  • SOLiD fights patent infringement claims over DAS equipment for 5G technologyJones Day is representing SOLiD, Inc. in a multi-jurisdictional patent litigation proceedings brought by a competitor, alleging that client's leading Distributed Antenna System ("DAS") solutions infringe claims of six patents (two European and four U.S.).
  • SK Innovation defeats request to exclude lithium-ion battery technology in ITC dispute with LG ChemJones Day clients SK Innovation Co., Ltd. and SK Battery America, Inc., following an evidentiary hearing in December 2020, prevailed against LG Chem et al. in a patent infringement dispute before the International Trade Commission (ITC) involving lithium-ion battery technology used in electric vehicles.
  • Deezer obtains dismissal of patent infringement lawsuit relating to music streaming technologyJones Day obtained a dismissal of a patent litigation brought by Data Scape Limited against Deezer Inc. for alleged infringement of music streaming technology patents.
