EDF obtains first-ever approval under new state aid framework for RDI

Jones Day advised Electricité de France S.A. ("EDF") in securing the European Commission's approval of €50 million in State aid from the French State to support R&D activities in the field of Small Modular Reactors ("SMRs"). This is the first time that the Commission has approved State aid under the new State aid Framework for research and development and innovation ("RDI"), adopted in October 2022. EDF is developing NUWARD™ the only SMR concept of its kind in the EU and which could potentially play a crucial role in efforts to meet the growing demand for decarbonized electricity generation.
