Jones Day secures $137,696 restitution award in human trafficking and forced labor pro bono matter

Client(s) Client CM

Jones Day was recently retained in a pro bono matter referred by Bet Tzedek to represent three victims of human trafficking and forced labor. Jones Day attorneys worked with counsel from Bet Tzedek, the Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking (CAST), Asian Americans Advancing Justice (AAAJ), and Arnold & Porter to obtain a restitution award for the clients for $137,696 in connection with a criminal case against one of the traffickers. At sentencing, the judge ordered payment of restitution within 10 days, and also imposed a $50,000 fine, five years probation, 400 hours of community service, and ordered defendant not to have any direct or indirect contact with any of the three victims or their families. Jones Day will continue to represent the clients' interests to seek a higher restitution award in connection with criminal charges against a second defendant in April, and will file a civil action for damages against the traffickers.
