Finca Vigía Foundation restores Ernest Hemingway's home in Cuba

Client(s) Finca Vigía Foundation, Inc.

Jones Day served as export control and economic sanctions compliance counsel to the Finca Vigía Foundation, Inc., a Boston-based non-profit dedicated to restoring and preserving Ernest Hemingway's estate outside of Havana. Our work with the Foundation enabled a historic shipment of donated construction materials, tools, and equipment to build a modern conservation laboratory to preserve the priceless work papers, manuscripts, library, and personal effects Hemingway left behind when he departed Cuba for the last time in 1960. We ensured the Foundation's activities and exports of the donated goods complied with one of the United States' most comprehensive embargoes and helped shape the historic preservation exception for the export of goods and services in support of the Cuban people as relations between the countries have improved. Jones Day also negotiated donation agreement language with major corporate donors who sought -- and received -- assurance that the Finca Vigía Foundation's good works also complied with U.S. laws.
