Jones Day lawyers staff two Mainland China offices, in Beijing and Shanghai. Lawyers new to Jones Day will be involved with advising clients on foreign direct investments, mergers and acquisitions, the sale and restructuring of state and foreign-owned assets, antitrust and competition, intellectual property, construction, labor and employment, real estate, and other legal matters in China for U.S., European, and Asian companies.

Our lawyers also represent a number of Chinese companies with respect to their investments and business activities, both in Mainland China and abroad. Many of our lawyers are natives of The People's Republic of China, and bring our clients valuable knowledge and established relationships with many key government agencies.

Jones Day's Beijing Office opened in 2003. Our Beijing lawyers are experienced in advising foreign investors in the areas of dispute resolution, antitrust and World Trade Organization issues, energy, intellectual property, tax, venture capital, and traditional foreign direct investment work. We also represent Chinese corporations and institutions with respect to their investments and activities in the United States, Latin America, Middle East, Europe, and elsewhere in the Asia-Pacific.

The China offices offer short-term internships to students at Chinese law schools in Beijing and Shanghai. Interns receive assignments that provide them with a taste of the work handled by international law firms in China.

The Jones Day China offices seek highly-credentialed law students from U.S. J.D. programs to work as summer associates. We require native fluency in both Mandarin and English. Summer associates are given assignments across a range of practice areas that may include everything from cross-border M&A transactions and structured finance to arbitration.

 

 

New lawyers attend the New Lawyer Academy, an annual event held in Washington, D.C. Each fall, new lawyers assemble from our more than 40 offices around the world to meet and network with each other and learn what it means to be One Firm Worldwide. Our Firm leaders, partners, and associates teach the new lawyers about Jones Day's culture, history, organization, and achievements and lead substantive and interactive training sessions. About the Fellowship


The Jones Day International Legal Fellowship ("Fellowship") is designed to identify and support exceptional legal talents in China. The Firm grants these Fellowships every year to outstanding Chinese law students. Since 2001, Jones Day has awarded a total of 219 Fellowships to law students in China. Winners include law students who have outstanding academic records, display original and creative thought, have strong communication skills in English and Chinese, and have shown an exceptional interest and promise in the legal profession.

Who can apply for the Fellowship?

The competition is open to all graduate students and undergraduates third year and above studying law at universities in Shanghai and Beijing. Previous Jones Day International Legal Fellowship winners are not eligible for consideration.

When is the deadline for applying for the Fellowship?
The deadline for applying for the Fellowship is April 18, 2021. Applicants must ensure that their application arrives at the Jones Day office in Shanghai or Beijing on or before the deadline. Late applications will not be considered.

How are the winners decided?

We focus on identifying outstanding legal talents, not necessarily on the best academic record. Fellowship winners are chosen not only for their outstanding intellect, but also for their character and potential for working at the highest level of legal practice.

What do the Fellowship winners receive?
2021 Fellowship winners will receive a RMB30,000 scholarship, a Jones Day Fellowship certificate and a Jones Day internship with our Beijing or Shanghai Office.

Note to all applicants:
Plagiarism will not be tolerated. If any evidence of dishonesty is found, the applicant will be disqualified from this year’s and future Fellowships, and their University will be informed.

Beijing, Shanghai  - Jones Day announces the commencement of its Jones Day International Legal Fellowship for the 2020-2021 academic year. This marks the 20th consecutive year that Jones Day will award scholarship to students to encourage the study of law in China.

The 2021 Fellowship awards will be given to law students from universities in China. Each winner will receive RMB30,000. Jones Day grants these Fellowships in the hope that each recipient will use the money to support their education and experience in whichever legal area they choose to pursue. 

The Jones Day International Legal Fellowship was borne out of the Firm's dedication to legal development in China. Since 2001, Jones Day has awarded a total of 230 Fellowships and over 3 million Renminbi of scholarships to law students in China.  

Applicants can download the application forms from the link named Shanghai Fellowship Application Form 2021 or Beijing Fellowship Application Form 2021. Completed applications should be sent to Jones Day’s offices in Shanghai or Beijing, no later than April 18, 2021.

The competition is open to all graduate students attending universities in China. It is also open to undergraduate students in their third year or above attending universities in China. Previous Jones Day International Legal Fellowship winners are not eligible for consideration.
