Chicago attorneys try first eviction case with Lawyers’ Committee for Better Housing in Cook County Municipal Court and achieve settlement for clients

Client(s) C.A.

On July 1, 2015, Jones Day tried an eviction case in Cook County Municipal Court on behalf of sisters in adjacent units whose landlord attempted to evict them suddenly and with improper notice. The tenants were month-to-month renters, always paid their rent on time, and lived in rodent-infested apartments. Before the Court ruled, the parties were able to reach a settlement that gave the tenants time to find new homes, reduced the rent owed, and avoided any eviction on the tenants' records.

During the three years that Jones Day has been working with Lawyers' Committee for Better Housing (LCBH), over ten summer associates and ten attorneys have worked on eviction cases. This was the first eviction case that went to trial. This was also the first trial of any kind in the Chicago office to be led by a summer associate and first-year associate.
