Laurie Humphreys is an experienced federal tax controversy advisor and litigator. With more than 20 years at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Laurie has worked on significant cases at all stages from audit through administrative appeals and trials.
Most recently, she served in the Strategic Advisory group. In that role, Laurie advised examination teams (auditors) on legal positions, procedures, and strategy for large corporate and partnership cases. Throughout her career, she worked on challenging issues including transfer pricing, property and casualty insurance, valuation, and economic substance issues. Laurie also taught classes for IRS agents and attorneys with topics including communication skills and trial advocacy.
Laurie led and managed large-case litigation, overseeing litigation strategy, trial, and settlement negotiations for complex issues, including cross-border transactions, financial products, and accounting issues. Much of her work involved novel legal issues. In recognition of her work, she received several awards including the National Litigator of the Year Settlement Award, the National Litigation Award, and the Commissioner's Outstanding Achievement Award.
