Chevron subsidiary Unocal wins Ninth Circuit reversal in case involving Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act

Client(s) Chevron Corporation

Jones Day was retained by Unocal Corporation ("Unocal") (now a subsidiary of Chevron Corporation) for representation in a Ninth Circuit appeal from an adverse ruling in a case involving the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act ("FSIA"). The plaintiff is a judgment creditor of the Democratic Republic of Congo ("DRC") who is seeking to collect on the judgment by executing on the DRC's right to payments from a Unocal subsidiary located in Bermuda. Unocal defended on the ground that the DRC's right to payment is protected from execution under the FSIA. On March 4, 2014, the Ninth Circuit ruled in Unocal's favor and reversed the judgment.
