BD obtains German antitrust clearance for Safety Syringes acquisition

Jones Day represented global medical technology company BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) before Germany's Federal Cartel Office (FCO), which cleared its acquisition of Safety Syringes Inc. (SSI) on December 21, 2012.  BD produces a variety of medical devices, including prefilled syringes which are sold to pharmaceutical companies. California based SSI specializes in the development of syringe safety devices designed to prevent needlestick injuries.

The parties announced the transaction in July 2012. BD retained Jones Day to represent it during the FCO's "phase II" proceedings. After a thorough review, and despite objections from several competitors, the FCO granted unconditional clearance.
