More Said Than Done: Migrants Need Lawyers, Not Speeches (The National Law Journal)
In an op-ed published by The National Law Journal, Stephen J. Brogan, Managing Partner of Jones Day from 2002 through 2022, posits that the legal profession's response to immigrants' growing legal needs has been a case of "more is said than done," a concern he first raised in 2015 in the Houston Chronicle and The National Law Journal. With immigration court backlogs above 4 million cases, faster timelines, more detention, and less funded counsel for unaccompanied minors, he calls on lawyers to do "less talking and more doing."
Mr. Brogan points to Jones Day's own commitment since the 2015 border crisis: 2,214 lawyers and 392 staff working on immigration matters, a Laredo office devoted only to immigration and asylum cases, "know your rights" presentations to more than 30,000 migrants, a success rate above 80% in 170 asylum trials, and a habeas corpus program for people held in custody unlawfully.
