Religious groups urge Supreme Court to grant petition in major religious-freedom case

Client(s) International Society for Krishna Consciousness; Church of the Lukumi Babalu Aye, Inc.

In February 2016, Jones Day filed an amicus brief, on behalf of religious groups, urging the Supreme Court to review a Ninth Circuit decision that upholds a Washington State law requiring pharmacists to dispense "Plan B" prescription drugs even when doing so violates their religious beliefs. The brief argues that the Supreme Court should take the case to decide whether courts must consider all evidence of legislative animus when analyzing whether a facially neutral law was actually intended to impose discriminatory burdens on religious practice, consistent with the Court's jurisprudence relating to other constitutional rights.
