José Covarrubias Azuela has more than 20 years of experience in judicial and arbitral proceedings involving commercial and civil disputes, including those that encompass contract breaches, business torts, and insolvency matters. He has particular experience representing clients in energy and construction disputes, having participated in multiple international arbitrations.

Prior to joining Jones Day in 2025, José represented clients in many significant matters, including Mexico's state-owned electric utility in numerous ICC (International Chamber of Commerce) commercial arbitrations related to disputes with independent power producers and utility construction firms; an Asian automobile manufacturer in a dispute with a former dealer in Mexico; a Big Tobacco product manufacturer in the enforcement of an arbitration award aimed to recover distribution of its products in Mexico; a global energy trading company in a claim brought by a qualified supplier regarding the early termination of an energy hedge agreement; a U.S. manufacturer of water heaters in a dispute against a manufacturer of industrial components regarding the supply of defective mechanical valves; an optical retailers in a post-closing M&A; a U.S. commodity trader in the enforcement an arbitration award; and an American bus manufacturer in the negotiation of a restructuring agreement in the bankruptcy proceedings of a Mexican trucking company.

He also advised Mexico's state-owned electric utility on its participation in the Wholesale Electricity Market through the negotiation of electricity and natural gas supply contracts and advised a qualified services provider in the adoption of an electricity hedging agreement with one of the world's largest energy marketers.
