A Chambers-ranked insurance coverage litigator, Matt Divelbiss represents policyholders in significant disputes with their insurers. He has recovered hundreds of millions of dollars for clients under directors and officers (D&O), general liability, employers' liability, property, cargo, cyber, and other policies. Clients describe him as "highly responsive" and "an excellent attorney who is very knowledgeable and professional."
Matt serves as lead counsel for a Fortune 50 company in its dispute with insurers over coverage for a multibillion-dollar settlement. His litigation experience spans state and federal trial courts, appellate courts, and domestic and international arbitrations, including a multiweek American Arbitration Association proceeding with complex expert issues and arbitrations under Bermuda Form policies.
Outside of litigation, Matt regularly counsels policyholder clients regarding their insurance programs, such as evaluating coverage for potential claims, interacting with insurers, and structuring D&O towers and other liability programs, including captive programs.
Beyond insurance coverage issues, Matt counsels and litigates for clients on matters involving supply contracts, energy contracts, construction contracts, product liability, corporate separations, and wrongful death claims.
He works with clients spanning diverse industries, including energy, construction (particularly data centers), health care, semiconductors, telecommunications, and automotive.
Since 2015, Matt has served as an adjunct professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, teaching Advanced Trial Evidence. He also serves as pro bono partner for the Pittsburgh Office, twice receiving an Unsung Hero Award for his extensive pro bono work.
