Joris Willems' practice focuses on digital transformation and advanced technologies (including data centers, digital infrastructure, and artificial intelligence [AI]), big data, sourcing, cloud services, cybersecurity, and complex commercial contracts. He draws on more than 25 years of legal experience to advise clients, often at boardroom level, on the full life cycle of technology matters, offering deep knowledge of how to handle litigation related to outsourcing, cloud services, data monetization, and information technology. The Legal 500 (2026) notes that Joris "stands out with his excellent pro-active counselling, understanding of the business and broad perspective on new developments."
Joris has extensive experience with complex, multijurisdictional transactions and has previously worked in Hong Kong, Shanghai, and London. He adapts quickly to different (corporate) cultures and their specific ways of doing business. Prior to joining Jones Day in 2026, Joris worked as an Amsterdam-based partner at one of Europe's largest independent law firms, where he established and headed the firm's technology group. Before that, he practiced for many years at a leading international firm, where he held various global leadership positions. Recent representative matters from his prior experience include advising Prosus (AEX: PRX) on various investments in technology companies, including AI enterprises and on Prosus launching its proprietary GenAI solution Toqan globally; advising a major media company on the global rollout of a streaming platform, including the use of AI-driven tools; and advising banks such as ABN Amro, Rabobank, ING, and Knab on strategic technology-related issues.
Joris serves as chair of the Dutch Association for AI and Robot Law (NVAIR), and he is a regular speaker at conferences such as Legal Geek Europe and IAPP AI Governance Global.
