Joana Soares focuses on patent prosecution and strategic intellectual property counseling in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. Her practice includes drafting and prosecuting patent applications in genetics, gene therapy, CRISPR (gene editing) technology, cancer therapeutics, virology, antibodies, stem cells, high-throughput screening, diagnostic assays, pharmaceuticals, formulations, and microbiology.
Joana also has extensive experience conducting due diligence research and analysis for freedom-to-operate investigations, patent validity and noninfringement opinions, patentability opinions, patent portfolio management, and technology licensing.
Prior to joining Jones Day, Joana was an associate and patent agent at an international law firm, worked at global pharmaceutical and health care companies where she was involved in upstream cell culture manufacturing areas, and served as an editor and translator for a scientific publication company.
