Ed Carter is a trial lawyer who focuses on defending companies in product liability lawsuits in state and federal courts throughout the United States. He has successfully defended clients in a variety of federal MDLs (multidistrict litigations), coordinated state proceedings, and consolidated multiplaintiff cases. A member of more than 28 trial teams in high-profile jury cases tried to verdict, including 16 cases as second chair and another 6 as trial counsel, Ed's litigation experience covers a wide range of industries and issues, including opioids, recreational vehicles, other consumer goods, preterm infant nutrition, health care, life sciences, private insurance reimbursement, retail pharmacy, constitutional rights, public nuisance, negligence, strict liability, design defect, duty to warn, fraud, conspiracy, RICO, consumer protection statutes, false advertising, and breach of contract.
Ed excels in all phases of litigation. He has robust experience working with consultants and experts: jury consultants, economists, accountants, engineers, pathologists, radiologists, epidemiologists, toxicologists, oncologists, psychiatrists, cardiologists, pulmonologists, pain management physicians, neonatologists, pediatric endocrinologists, pharmacists, nurses, statisticians, historians, and marketing and advertising professionals. From 2007 to 2018, he was part of the national coordinating counsel team representing R.J. Reynolds Tobacco in complex product liability lawsuits and personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits in Florida. In more recent years, he has been a member of the leadership teams directing defense strategy in MDL proceedings in the Northern District of Ohio and the Northern District of Illinois.
Ed is a member of Jones Day's Recruiting Committee and is the hiring partner for the Columbus Office. Ed is also active in the Columbus community, serving as the president of Breakthrough T1D's (formerly JDRF) Central Ohio Chapter.
