Joel Burren

Joel Burren's practice is concentrated on commercial resolution and mitigation of complex matters. He acts for many types of corporates in a variety of jurisdictions, with a focus on the mining, resources, and energy sectors. Joel is passionate about his work and enjoys navigating complex problems and client priorities at all stages of a project life cycle.

Joel has in-depth experience acting for clients in large financial and contractual disputes, regulatory investigations, general commercial arbitration and litigation, and workplace prosecutions. He practices across a wide range of courts and jurisdictions and has been involved in litigation at many levels of the state and federal judiciary, including in the Magistrates, District and Supreme Courts of Western Australia, Supreme Court of Queensland, Supreme Court of New South Wales, Federal Court of Australia, and the High Court of Fiji.

Joel's prior experience includes acting for the designer of a partially constructed building in relation to criminal and civil claims arising from the structure's collapse; acting for the seller of a subsidiary oil and gas services company in relation to claims of breaches of warranties under the sale agreement; acting for a consultant in the enforcement of an arbitration award against a foreign state entity; advising on the potential regulatory consequences of the misclassification of shipped dangerous goods; and defending a former corporate trustee against allegations of breach of contract and breach of trustee duties.
