Courtney Burks represents corporate clients in high-stakes, complex employment litigation in state and federal courts throughout the country. She also counsels employers regarding compliance with employment laws and employment-related diligence on business transactions. Her clients span a broad spectrum of industries, including information technology, manufacturing, consumer goods, insurance, and retail.
Courtney's litigation practice focuses on claims brought under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA), the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), and other state and local employment statutes. Courtney has argued motions and appeals in federal and state courts, and her in-depth brief writing experience is routinely sought when litigation presents complex issues or matters of first impression. She recently second chaired a five-day arbitration involving a former employee's political discrimination claim, which resulted in an award in favor of Jones Day's client.
Courtney is involved in Jones Day's Border Project, which provides legal representation to individuals with claims for immigration relief. To date, she has been a member of two trial teams that have successfully obtained asylum for Venezuelans fleeing political persecution.
Prior to joining Jones Day, Courtney served as a law clerk on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and on the United States District Court for the District of Arizona.
