Matt Modderman's practice concentrates on intellectual property litigation. Matt represents clients in a variety of patent infringement matters, including actions in federal district courts and before the International Trade Commission (ITC). In addition, he represents clients in trade secret litigation in state and federal courts under the Uniform Trade Secrets Act (UTSA) and the Defend Trade Secrets Act (DTSA). Matt's litigation experience spans a variety of technologies across multiple industries ranging from vehicle suspension systems to medical devices and inventory management software.

Matt has experience with every stage of litigation, including pre-lawsuit investigations, initial pleadings, fact and expert discovery, depositions, claim construction, motion practice, trial, and post-trial briefing.

Before attending law school, Matt worked in manufacturing engineering at The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. He later worked as a patent agent for a boutique patent prosecution firm, prosecuting patents in diverse fields of technology at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and other patent offices around the world. After law school, Matt served as a law clerk for Judge Ryan Holte at the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, where he worked on civil cases against the United States government involving patent infringement, Fifth Amendment takings, bid protests, complex tax, and government contracts. As a law clerk, Matt assisted in preparing for, and attended, numerous oral hearings on patent infringement disputes, including multiple claim construction and summary judgment hearings.

Matt maintains an active pro bono practice, representing tenants in local housing court and pursuing constitutional issues in federal district and circuit courts.
