Client resolves contract dispute with insurance company

Client(s) Rankin, Jane

Jones Day Washington associate Christopher Thatch successfully represented Jane Rankin in a contract dispute before the Maryland District Court for Anne Arundel County. Ms. Rankin hired Insurance Repair Specialists, Inc. ("IRS") to renovate her home after it sustained major fire damage in March 2005. IRS filed suit against Ms. Rankin in July 2007, seeking approximately $9,147 for the balance on the contract, $2,744 in attorney's fees, and up to $2,000 in interest. On the morning of trial, IRS agreed to settle the dispute for $6,326.52, less than half the total damages IRS sought in its complaint. IRS waived interest and attorney's fees and agreed to reduce the contract balance for credits that it failed to pay Ms. Rankin during the renovation.
