Our Stories

SHARYL REISMAN | WORK AND FAMILY

Firmwide Hiring Partner | New York
We want people who can see the humanity in our Firm and see that our lawyers care. That’s a distinguishing feature of our Firm. We care about each other. We care about our clients. And we are all driven by that same goal of providing excellent client service.
“I often get asked by lawyers if it is possible to have a successful, challenging, satisfying career and still have a life outside of work, and my answer is always the same - a resounding yes."

YVETTE MCGEE BROWN - BUILDING A LEGACY

Partner-In-Charge of Diversity, Inclusion & Advancement | Columbus
When you look at opportunities, you look first at the culture of the firm, you look at the people you’re going to be working with, and then you look at the legal work you get to do, because that's important. If the legal work isn't good, the other two aren't going to carry the day. You don't have to look very far. If you want that level of work, this is the place you come.
"If there is a hot button legal issue, we've touched it. We're involved in it. If you want that level of work, this is the place you come."

RASHA GERGES SHIELDS | INVESTING IN LAWYERS

Partner | Los Angeles

Jones Day invests in lawyers long term. They don't focus on the business that you bring in today but on training and development that can make you grow for years to come.

As an associate, I worked with certain partners that allowed me to argue before the Supreme Court. It could have been easy for another partner to say I've never done that, so I want to do it. But they invested in me and gave me the opportunity.

"I really wanted to picture myself someplace where I could retire and live a full career, and I've seen examples of people who have lived full careers here at Jones Day."

AARON AGENBROAD | BE YOURSELF

Partner-In-Charge | San Francisco
It’s so important to be comfortable with being exactly who you are. I'm one of the very few people in San Francisco who wears a suit every day. I could try to wear jeans every day, but it wouldn't be authentic or true to who I am. When I talk with associates about career development and what they need to do to succeed, I stress how essential it is that you just be you, because people will start to smell a fake a mile away.
"One of the keys to help guide the ship is to genuinely own who you are."

ANN ROSSUM | MYTH FOR JUNIOR ASSOCIATES

Associate | Irvine
As a third year associate, I had the opportunity to work on a trial. I was writing pocket briefs and bench memos. I took on a variety of tasks that were really important to the outcome of the case. Each person on the team had a very important role in the outcome for the client. I felt really important as part of the team. What better opportunity than a trial to feel like a litigator?
"I think it's a myth that junior associates can't get opportunities at large law firms because I've experienced the exact opposite."

HELEN SCOTT | FLEXIBILITY

Associate | London

Before I joined Jones Day in 2013, I hadn’t really considered a career in employment law but because of the flexible training system, I had the opportunity to try new work and I was immediately fascinated by it. I joined the Labor & Employment practice.

The Employment practice at Jones Day London is relatively unusual in that it’s very broad so we advise our clients on huge multi-jurisdictional cross border deals as well as guide them through day-to-day issues and we represent them before the Employment Tribunal. That makes me a better lawyer because I have a full insight into our client’s needs and it means that I have developed a broad spectrum of skills.
