Iván Martín-Barbón has more than 20 years of experience advising sponsors, financial institutions, asset managers, and investments firms in a wide range of cross-border deals including real estate finance, private credit, energy transition, and structured and asset-backed finance. In addition, Iván has a strong focus on financial regulatory matters, fintech, and digital assets.
Iván leads the real estate finance (REF) team within the broader Spanish "Real Estate One-Stop Shop" platform — offering clients a fully coordinated legal strategy across the entire investment life cycle in real estate.
Iván’s practice brings together three core intersecting practice areas: real estate finance — structuring sponsor-led and asset-backed deals with local insight and cross-border execution; structured finance — from leverage solutions (warehouse, repo, NAV [net asset value]) to securitization frameworks; and financial regulation — covering the increasingly complex rules around AIFMD (Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive), lending licenses, risk retention, and fund marketing in Europe, among other topics.
This broad exposure gives Iván a 360º understanding of the financial system, allowing him to help clients navigating legal, regulatory, and commercial risk in highly dynamic sectors.
Iván's recent experience include real estate finance transactions acting for Blackstone Real Estate Debt Strategies, Goldman Sachs Asset Management, LaSalle Asset Management, and Greystar. Iván also has represented Orange in the financial regulation matters connected with the joint venture of MasMovil and Orange Spain and Euroclear in the acquisition of a strategic stake in Banco Inversis.
Iván is recommended in Chambers Global, Chambers Europe, The Legal 500 EMEA, and Best Lawyers guides. He also lectures on real estate finance at Instituto de Empresa (IE).
