Dr. Shovon Ashraf's practice brings a distinct combination of scientific depth and IP legal experience in the biopharmaceutical sector, spanning roles as both in-house and outside counsel. He partners with life sciences companies and academic institutions to strategically secure and protect maximum market exclusivity for differentiated therapeutics from discovery through post-commercial launch.
Shovon builds robust, creative global patent portfolios aligned with clients' core commercial objectives; conducts freedom-to-operate analyses; performs IP due diligence; structures and negotiates IP license and collaboration agreements; and participates in post-grant challenges before U.S. and European patent offices. He has extensive experience in patenting and analyzing patent landscape of antibodies, peptides, oligonucleotides, gene and cell therapies, drug conjugates (e.g., antibody-drug conjugate [ADC]), drug-delivery systems and devices, formulations, and drug production and manufacturing.
Prior to joining Jones Day, Shovon served as vice president of intellectual property, biologics at a U.S.-based biopharmaceutical company where he led an in-house team of patent attorneys and agents to build and manage patent estates, develop aggressive offensive and defensive IP strategies for complex biologics, and provide rigorous IP oversight to R&D (research and development), CMC (chemistry, manufacturing, and controls), and regulatory teams. In close collaboration with the corporate business development and legal teams, he played a pivotal role in structuring and negotiating complex, multibillion-dollar cross-border IP licensing and collaboration agreements.
