Ryan Walsh is a trial lawyer with 25 years of experience enforcing and defending clients' rights in patent and other high-stakes technology litigation. He has first chair experience representing clients in venues across the country, including the International Trade Commission and the Federal Circuit. He serves as a co-leader of intellectual property litigation for Jones Day's global IP practice.

While Ryan regularly defends clients accused of infringement by competitors and nonpracticing entities, he also has extensive experience enforcing clients' patent and other intellectual property rights. His cases have involved a wide range of disciplines, including wireless communications, Internet of Things, medical devices, biotech, software, advanced polymers, smart grid, cable television, interactive internet web pages, printer/copier, wireless sensor networks, and glucose monitoring.

Ryan has litigated copyright cases involving software, musical compositions, carpet design, and other original works, and he has experience with offensive and defensive temporary restraining order (TRO)/preliminary injunction proceedings in trade secret and Lanham Act cases.

Ryan is an active leader in the Atlanta legal community. He is a former president of both the Atlanta Bar Association and the Atlanta Legal Aid Society and currently serves on the board for the Atlanta Bar Foundation and the Georgia Intellectual Property Alliance. He is a Master of the Bench for the Hon. Charles A. Pannell, Jr. IP Inn of Court.

  • The Marena Group obtains dismissal of patent infringement allegations over its compression fabric garmentsJones Day defended The Marena Group, LLC, a manufacturer of medical-grade compression garments, against patent infringement allegations brought by EFA, Inc. in the Northern District of Georgia.
  • Fortrea completes $570 million private placement of Senior Secured Notes and obtains $1.5 billion credit facilityJones Day represented Fortrea Holdings Inc., a leading global contract research organization (“CRO”) that provides comprehensive phase I through IV biopharmaceutical product and medical device services, patient access solutions and other enabling services, in connection with the Rule 144A and Regulation S offering of $570 million aggregate principal amount of 7.500% Senior Secured Notes due 2030 and a $1.5 billion senior secured credit facility as part of its spin-off from Laboratory Corporation of America Holdings.
  • Ricoh awarded attorneys' fees after Federal Circuit affirmance of summary judgment win in patent dispute over office and production printer technologyOn behalf of Ricoh USA, Inc., Jones Day prevailed before the Federal Circuit, obtaining a Rule 36 affirmance of the district court’s decisions dismissing two patents for indefiniteness at the Markman stage and granting summary judgment of non-infringement on the five remaining patents.
  • Ricoh resolves Lanham Act case involving its global "imagine. change." tagline in D. Minn.Jones Day defended Ricoh Co., Ltd. and Ricoh USA, Inc. in a Lanham Act case in the District of Minnesota in which a commercial printing company accused Ricoh of infringing certain trademarks owned by the plaintiff.
  • Home Depot wins ITC trial in patent litigation relating to filament LED technologyJones Day successfully defended The Home Depot, Inc. before the International Trade Commission (ITC) against multi-patent litigation asserted by The Regents of the University of California.
  • Ricoh granted summary judgment of non-infringement in patent case relating to office and production printer technologyOn behalf of Ricoh USA, Inc., Jones Day obtained an order granting a motion for summary judgment of non-infringement on the five remaining patents in a case originally involving 19 patents relating to both hardware and software aspects of office and production printer technology.
  • Home Depot obtains early dismissal in software license disputeJones Day obtained early dismissal of a lawsuit brought by software vendor Mi9 Retail, Inc. against The Home Depot, Inc. and its affiliates, including Home Depot Mexico.

  • Idenix wins $2.54 billion jury verdict in Gilead patent dispute involving hepatitis C drugsAfter a nine day trial and less than two hours of jury deliberation, Jones Day, on behalf of Idenix Pharmaceuticals LLC (a subsidiary of Merck & Co.), won the largest patent infringement verdict in U.S. history to date, involving a multi-billion dollar patent dispute with Gilead Sciences Inc. over sofosbuvir, the active ingredient in Gilead’s hepatitis C drugs Sovaldi® and Harvoni®.
