John Phillips has extensive mergers and acquisitions experience with a particular focus on cross-border transactions. He also has advised on numerous private equity investments, initial public offerings, rights issues, placings, and other equity issues. John is Partner-in-Charge of the London Office.

Recent representations include advising: Standard Bank on its sale of its £600 million controlling shareholdings in Standard Bank Argentina S.A. to Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Limited; Procter & Gamble on its acquisition of Ambi Pur, the air care business of Sara Lee, for $470 million and on the sale of its European tissue business to Svenska Cellulosa AB for $672 million; DV4 Limited on the acquisition of Minerva plc, a real estate company with an enterprise value of £1.2 billion, and its acquisition of Oakmayne Plaza; and WL Ross & Co. on its £100 million investment in Virgin Money Holdings (UK) Limited, its participation in a €1.123 billion minority investment in Bank of Ireland, and its acquisition of Northern Rock.

John advised Alfa Group and Access-Renova Group on the formation of TNK-BP, a joint venture with BP plc involving the contribution of oil and gas assets valued at US$18 billion, and on the sale to TNK-BP of a 49.5 percent interest in Slavneft for US$1.35 billion and Alfa Group in the monetization of its rights to future delivery of BP ordinary shares.

John is spotlighted in Chambers UK (2008-2011) as a leading individual in corporate/M&A and in the M&A section of The Legal 500 (2009-2011). He coordinates the Firm's U.K. M&A practice.
