Dave Cochran is an electrical engineer and patent attorney in Jones Day's Intellectual Property Practice. His experience includes international patent prosecution, patent opinions, prelitigation counseling, patent reexamination, due diligence of intellectual property assets, and patent litigation. He has filed and prosecuted hundreds of patent applications in the United States and throughout Europe, South America, and Asia. Dave has provided dozens of patent opinions to clients, including noninfringement, invalidity, patentability, and freedom-to-operate opinions. In addition to opinion work, Dave works closely with Firm clients to develop strategies for avoiding competitor patents and preparing for litigation. He provides IP due diligence services for licensing, venture capital investments, and M&A matters. Dave also participates in all aspects of patent litigation from pre-suit investigation through trial and appeal.
Dave has represented clients including ABB, Eastman Kodak, Gennum, IBM, Research In Motion, and SAS Institute.
Prior to joining Jones Day, Dave worked as an electrical engineer for IBM and NASA, where he developed technical experience in the areas of semiconductor processing and fabrication, circuit design and simulation, semiconductor physics, laser electronics, software, embedded computer systems, control systems, power supply systems, and high-resolution imaging devices. Dave holds three U.S. patents and one European patent related to his work for IBM.
