Venezuelan family obtains asylum

Client(s) Clients E.G., et al.

Jones Day obtained a grant of asylum for a Venezuelan family of three based on their persecution at the hands of the Venezuelan government for their political opinions. The clients were persecuted by the Venezuelan government because of their membership in Voluntad Popular, a progressive pro-democracy political party and because of their participation in protests against the Maduro regime. The clients were forced to flee Venezuela after they received threats from the “colectivos,” a government-sponsored paramilitary group, and were subjected to attacks from the colectivos, including kidnapping and torture. The trial team’s victory is part of the continued success Jones Day’s Laredo Project has had in obtaining asylum for clients.
