Jones Day began as a partnership formed in 1893 by two eminent Cleveland, Ohio, USA lawyers, Judge Edwin J. Blandin and William Lowe Rice. Judge Blandin was known for his courtroom skill and judicial temperament, and Rice was recognized as a lawyer with business acumen and entrepreneurial instinct. They made one particularly important early decision, by hiring as their first associate Frank Hadley Ginn, who would come to be the driving force behind our early growth and the establishment of the Managing Partner form of governance that continues to be the hallmark of Jones Day today.
