Jones Day's Stephen Hibbard Named to Lawyers Without Borders Executive Board

December 2016

Lawyers Without Boarders (LWOB), a nonprofit organization with the mission to support the rule of law and access to justice around the world, announced that Stephen Hibbard, a partner in the Firm's Financial Institutions Litigation and Regulation Practice Group, will join the LWOB Executive Board of Directors. Mr. Hibbard previously served as an inaugural member of LWOB's Advisory Council that was established in 2015 to help grow support and improve programming, as well as trustees of LWOB-UK.

"Working with LWOB these past 10 years has been a great adventure and privilege, and I look forward to serving on LWOB's Executive Board," said Hibbard. "LWOB's path-breaking projects to promote just and civil societies by advancing the rule of law around the globe are of vital importance in a world where dictatorial rule, corruption and discrimination persist."

A partner in Jones Day's San Francisco office, Mr. Hibbard's pro bono work is extensive. He led the team of lawyers for LWOB's Electoral Project, a roadmap to legal reform in a region where free and fair multi-party elections are prohibited. As part of the Firm's work with LWOB, he and other Jones Day lawyers have also led training programs on wildlife and human trafficking for Kenyan, Tanzanian, and Ugandan judges and prosecutors. In addition to his involvement with LWOB, his many pro bono representations include asylum cases, a class action that secured better health care for HIV+ woman inmates in California prisons, and a free speech case decided by the U.S. Supreme Court. Mr. Hibbard is a past President of the Association of Business Trial Lawyers of Northern California and is currently Vice Chairman of the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs.

LWOB's Executive Board of Directors is comprised of six members and is responsible for monitoring the organization's progress, transparency and pro bono management. "This is the first time we've named private practitioners from firms in a supportive relationship with LWOB to our Board," said Christina Storm, LWOB Founder and Executive Director. "We have long recognized that critical to fulfilling its mission, is LWOB's ability to harness and structure pro bono resources and contributions from lawyers and law firms around the world. Steve truly understands and believes in what we're trying to achieve. His long standing relationship as a pro bono volunteer in our programs for the last several years along with his dedication to pro bono service generally will help guide this organization through the important strategic planning that lies ahead."

Mr. Hibbard is a complex commercial litigator who has represented U.S. and non-U.S. clients on six continents in a broad range of disputes. He routinely represents financial institutions, companies, directors and officers in financial disputes, with a particular focus on shareholder litigation, including securities class actions, derivative actions, and M&A litigation. Mr. Hibbard also frequently advises clients in connection with internal investigations and SEC investigations. His decades of experience representing clients in courts throughout the U.S. and before the DOJ, SEC, FINRA, and the FTC includes handling corporate governance disputes, corporate finance and accounting disputes, antitrust and unfair competition claims, defamation, copyright, tax, and unfair business practices claims.
