Jones Day named an Appellate Group of the Year 2016 by Law360

February 2017

Jones Day's Issues & Appeals Practice has been named an Appellate Group of the Year for 2016 by legal publication Law360 as part of its Practice Groups of the Year 2016 series.

Law360 recognized the Firm’s work in significant Supreme Court matters and noted that five lawyers argued seven cases before the Supreme Court during the 2015 Term. Law360 singled out Husky Int’l Electronics v. Ritz and McDonnell v. United States as particularly significant wins. In Husky, the Court ruled in favor of Jones Day's client and concluded that "actual fraud" under the Bankruptcy Code does not require a false representation, but can encompass other types of fraudulent acts. In McDonnell, Jones Day successfully represented former Virginia Governor Robert McDonnell and convinced the Supreme Court to vacate Governor McDonnell’s convictions for public corruption offenses. The Firm represented Governor McDonnell from the trial court level all the way to the Supreme Court.

Law360 also commented on the important role Jones Day played in the representation of non-profit Roman Catholic organizations in a challenge under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act to the Affordable Care Act’s contraceptive mandate. The Supreme Court vacated several lower-court decisions and remanded so the parties could devise an agreement that protects religious rights while allowing the government to provide contraceptive coverage through alternative means.

With its singular tradition and widely recognized record of client service, Jones Day provides formidable legal talent across multiple disciplines and jurisdictions through the seamless collaboration of a true partnership that shares fundamental professional values. Spread across five continents, Jones Day has more than 2,500 lawyers in 44 offices located in major centers of business and finance around the world.
