Jim Parker is one of Australia's leading environmental health and safety lawyers with a career spanning more than 30 years. He advises clients on complex and ever-changing laws on hazardous materials, air and water quality, contaminated land, climate change, and renewable energy. He also assists clients on regulatory matters and M&A transactions involving development, land use and water approvals, and environmental permitting.

Jim also has worked on major civil litigation and defense of criminal prosecutions in some of Australia's most controversial EH&S cases. Prior to joining Jones Day he acted for DuPont Australia in a high-profile regulatory investigation, herbicide emission impact study, and the successful defense of a pollution prosecution by the EPA. In addition, he acted for BHP and Vale Australia in a dispute involving mine subsidence and validity of mining approvals, Cockatoo Dockyard in disputes with the government involving land and harbor sediment pollution in Sydney Harbour and on asbestos-related claims by former workers, and Brambles and Cleanaway on health and safety prosecutions and contaminated land claims.

Jim has advised energy companies on electricity generation and coal seam gas projects and operational matters, including land and water access. Previously, he was the principal adviser on environmental matters to the South Australian government on its electricity privatization program and its development approvals for the Pelican Point power station. Jim also advised on M&A transactions and coordinated the preparation of expert environmental evidence in a high-profile class action in Thailand for a zinc mining company arising from cadmium-related health and property damage claims by villagers.
