Google obtains victory at Federal Circuit by invalidating all asserted claims from traffic map patent

Client(s) Google LLC

Jones Day obtained a victory for Google LLC at the Federal Circuit in an appeal from a decision of the Patent Trial and Appeal Board ("PTAB") concerning patent claims directed to processing geographical information relating to traffic. For one patent claim, the Federal Circuit reversed the Board's finding that the claim was non-obvious and held that the claim was unpatentable as a matter of law. This marks one of the rare instances where the Federal Circuit has invalidated a patent claim without remand after the PTAB found the claim to be patentable. For two other claims, the court affirmed the Board's determination of unpatentability.
