R.J. Reynolds wins summary judgment in pension benefits case

January 2017

Jones Day client Reynolds American Inc. won summary judgment over a claim for pension benefits in the Northern District of Mississippi. Plaintiff sought to retroactively alter benefits elections and obtain adjusted benefits payments. Reynolds moved for summary judgment on the administrative record on the basis that the plan administrator correctly denied Plaintiff's requested benefits changes since his original elections were valid and irrevocable. Judge Michael Mills found that the record supported the plan administrator's determination and that the administrator did not abuse its discretion in denying Plaintiff's requests.
