Youth has probation period renegotiated

Clients Montgomery County criminal defendants

Jones Day Washington has represented defendants, on a volunteer basis, in criminal cases in Montgomery County under the auspices of the Office of the Public Defender. Joe Clark and Jordan Cunning represented a young man who was charged with robbery, force and violence (a potential 15 year felony), for allegedly taking a cell phone from an acquaintance at a recreation center. Because as a juvenile the client had a number of previous contacts with law enforcement officials, and had one prior conviction for trespassing, the State was initially not inclined to make any plea offer. By demonstrating the client's more recent responsible conduct and increased maturity, however, Joe and Jordan were ultimately able to negotiate a plea agreement under which the client pled to a single misdemeanor count of second degree assault and the State recommended a sentence that will only require him to serve a period of probation.
