Jones Day San Diego assisted a pro bono immigration client obtain withholding of removal at a merits hearing. The client had suffered horrible abuse in Costa Rica at the hands of police and private citizens due to her transgender and homosexual status, and her case was referred by the Court to counsel due to its complexity. The client was ineligible for asylum, but was ecstatic to receive withholding of removal. Jimmy Tabb and Mark Kafka led the Jones Day team, with substantial assistance from summer associate Evan Roberts and non-profit Casa Cornelia Law Center.
