Jones Day Washington worked with the Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless on behalf of a woman who was seeking counsel to represent her in an administrative hearing before the Social Security Administration ("SSA") concerning the denial of her application for supplemental security income benefits. The legal issue involved whether the client was disabled within the meaning of the Social Security Act and its regulations in order to qualify her for benefits. Julie Broas and Ryan Newman conducted an investigation into the merits of the client's medical claim and submitted a brief on her behalf. After a one-day hearing before Administrative Law Judge G.B. Arthur, the SSA granted the client's appeal and issued a fully favorable decision awarding her SSI benefits.
